La Dolce Vita

New residence in place of original dwelling. A statement home, composed of natural stone, stucco and metal roofing, for a modern family with traditional roots. The house configuration and expanses of glass blur the lines between interior and exterior to enhance natural daylight and views to the wonderfully private yard beyond. While the footprint of the house is ample, the design was careful to control the scale and warm feel of the house.

Sunset Lake House

New construction on an empty lot that fronts a reservoir. The scale of the ample interior program was broken down with a site inspired angled shape, which, along with the expansive glass and elevated patio spaces, allowed for full enjoyment of the water views. Multiple vaulted spaces extended a similar openness to the interior.

Embracing All Angles

New residence in place of original ranch-style house. The expansive-glass façade filters light into every room and takes advantage of the wooded views of a hill site overlooking a river. With differently pitched ceilings and separate wings with intertwined elements, every room has its own identity – a perfect solution for a family that sought a change in their lives and wanted places to gather while also having something to retreat to as individuals.

Modern Farmhouse 2.0

New Residence. Looking for something one-of-a-kind and totally unique, this residence combines a love for contemporary details and the modern farmhouse as a concept. Windows become 3D “floating” boxes that project from the siding, while the forms of a traditional gable become thick outlines abstracting the elevation. The use of unexpected materials like dark punches of stucco and warm wood accents push the exterior of this home to the next iteration of the modern farmhouse.

White Wood Wonders

The existing raised ranch was sited on the property that rose from left to right, with a two-car garage under the main-level of the house, on the left when viewed from the street. The concept to mirror the garage to the opposite side of the property allowed the Garage to be more proximate to the main level, and the new, carefully appointed Mudroom and Pantry. This allows for efficient gathering of belongings, overflow food items, etc.. in a proximate and easy path from the Garage, rather than in through the basement and up a flight of stairs.

Once the orientation was flipped, a full walkout lower level was possible. Integrating the lower level with pool and stacked, exterior covered entertaining spaces allows the house to host in all seasons, with both interior and yard-based entertaining.

The sweeps of the repeated gable rooflines lends the house a classic, traditional flavor, with high quality, low maintenance materials reinforcing the aesthetic. An ample front porch organizes the exterior forms and helps provide cover for guests and deliveries. A second floor bonus space above a centralized, higher-ceiling Family Room below allows for the kids to host friends at the house, without the less-desirable need to split off to individual bedrooms.

Horizon Hideaway

The clients purchased a dated two-story contemporary house, with poor overall flow and layout, and practically no curb appeal, but with ample floor area. There was economic value in re-using the foundation/footprint, so the design inquiry began be utilizing existing perimeter, while introducing strategic, small additions to allow for maximization of spaces and proportions.

The desired styles that inspired the exterior were an appreciation for simpler, Modern lines combined with the classic proportion and materials of Hampton-inspired homes. The front façade, while presenting a timeless and quiet appeal, still offers hints of massive amounts of glass and dynamic, active forms at the rear of the house. Integrating the existing pool, along with terrain change as the property dropped from front to the back of house, was critical to creating a walk-out lower level that engages the users as much as any above-grade level in the house.

Z+ Interiors integrated closely, along with the client input, feedback and inspiration images, early in the design process. This helped visually integrate all spaces, and allow for ingenuity and atypical solutions in multiple locations throughout the home. The use of glass at the interior, from a Primary Suite wall, to enclosure of the secondary stair to amplify the “floating” nature of the landing, to the wine wall at the dining room, helped unify the copious amounts of glass at the exterior facades with the vibe of the clean, minimal interiors.

Six Sides of Home

The design process started first with an inquiry to explore a large-scale renovation and addition to the dated 1950’s house on an ample property with considerable rear yard privacy. When it was clear that the original house could not be salvaged to meet the program and stylistic needs of the owners, a new house, complete with all the amenities one would dream of in a new custom residence entered the conversation.

Time with family, and spaces that would reflect the unique character of the kids, were conveyed by the client as primary goals. The octagonal shapes, along with hidden nooks, window benches, and other unique character-laden details began to influence not only the plan, but also, the eventual inspiration for the exterior.

Porches, turrets, natural stone, shake siding and standing seam roof accents pushed the house towards a classic aesthetic, but the homeowners playful and eclectic personalities pushed inclusion of more Modern details such as black windows, large expanses of mulled window combinations, and an angled rotation of some of the living space to embrace the pool and exterior living areas.

Tranquil Farmhouse

The client sought a two-story addition and reconfiguration to a turn-of-the-century home originally constructed in 1895. While the classic four-square design made for a very minimal, clean plan configuration, it created a design challenge to add to such a regular form on the exterior with an asymmetrical program and layout.

The house benefits from 9’ ceilings, and a central stair that circulates between walk out basement, all the way up to the finished attic level. Field stone foundations on the existing house were cues to add natural field stone veneer accents to the new concrete foundations. Shake siding, and short fractional window mullions add charm and period-appropriate detail.

Circulation was shifted from the front façade to the drive-side of the house, as a new mudroom, foyer, laundry, scullery and closets were added to update the outdated layout to more closely reflect Modern-day life. A kitchen addition with ample windows facing the rear yard and nature preserve beyond affords ample morning natural light. The addition also frames the pool and hardscape additions, between the main house and carriage house that was previously renovated by the owners.
